What's the coolest piece of homemade equipment you've used to pull off a shot? Was it a wheelchair you used for a tracking shot? An elaborate array of rubberbands and paper clips you used to suspend a microphone in order to eliminate handling noise? An umbrella spray-painted gold that you used as a reflector to warm up the colors in a shot?
We were doing a nighttime shot out in the woods last summer and we wanted to create some soft light without creating harsh shadows. Problem was that the only light we had available was a 500 Watt portable halogen light. We ended up using push-pins to suspend a plain white bed sheet between 2 trees and bouncing the light off of the sheet. The overall result worked, but would have been better if we had a second light to backlight the actors and seperate them from the background.

Mine's probably the one I mentioned in another thread which was half a dozen or so bin bags with pin holes in and filled with water positioned around the set to (cheaply) create rain.
PS. Are your 500w halogens self-powered or do they require connection to the mains?

The halogen requires a power source. I think we needed two 50-foot extension cords in order to reach the set.
By the way, I'm definitely going to try your rain contraption one of these days.
I lit an interior of a car with Christmas lights and some little cans I made out of flashlight bulbs. It was cool and looked stellar.

I used a Camera Tripod as a laser-gun in "Attack of the Killer Teddies". With a bit of post (I.e. some laser effects, it didn't look too bad...
I'll get some stills on the web (one day...)
Also used a big Roll Up cig as a joint / spliff in another film. it looked perfect, but had no mary-jane in it...

This is a good topic- it brings to mind many memories of silly things I've used (usually through desparation) which when viewed look dodgy, but no-one else notices!
Worst one- I was let down by an set designer, he ran out of time to make a mirror smash effect, so we used tin foil! It looked quite poor to me, but no-one to this day has ever noticed. [img]biggrin.gif[/img] fools, heh heh heh.
